Ankle sprain: Rest your ankle. Continue icing and elevation. Try a compression bandage around the ankle. It should be gentle pressure and not too tight. It will support ankle and reduce swelling. See your doctor if it does not get better.

Ice is good for the first 24-48 hours. After that the ice may actually slow the healing process. Once the swelling goes down, the ankle loses the protection from mobility the edema offers. To replace it, some type of brace or wrap may be necessary to prevent reinjury and accelerate healing. Depending on the age of the patient and the age of the injury, imaging may be warranted.
