TMD: You are describing something called temporomandibular dysfunction. Your tmj, or the jaw joint is not working in an ideal way. Many people have noisy joints, and these don't always need treatment. But if your jaw is locking open or closed, this should be investigated. See your dentist as a place to start. He/she may take some x-rays and make you a mouth appliance. Physical therapy can help too.

TMD: Temperomandibular disfunction. The jaw joints are a fairly fragile and poorly constructed joint. Many moving parts and coordination to have it run smoothly. The clicking is the cartilage moving around and causing the noise. The locking is the cartilage getting stuck either behind the joint (open lock) or in front of the joint (closed lock). You should seek a consult asap.

TMJ: As one opens their jaw wide, the joint rotates and moves forward, as moves forward it can over the eminence (bump of joint area) making a popping noise and become locked in position. I advise to seek a dentist who specializing in treating tmj.

Disk malposition: Your TMJ disk is out of position. May not need treatment if no other symptoms. Ask TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.
