A member asked:

Why does my back hurt when i cough, sneeze, or hold my breath. i hav'nt been sick recently or thrown out my back in 9 months?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Stress: Coughing and sneezing is an involuntary valsalva effect...Causing muscles that may be strained in the past to contact and this causes further strain..These muscle contractions can also briefly and forcefully impinge nerves which results in pain....Pain is your body telling you that something is wrong...It would be a good idea to see your family doc for a check-up and discussion of this problem.
