A member asked:

I was wondering if there is a rheumatologist familiar with a medication approved by the fda last year that is called xeljanz (tofacitinib).

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: It is what is called a jak kinase inhibitor . It is approved to treat rheumatoid arthritis. It is given as a pill twice a day starting with 5 mg but can go to 10 mg twice a day. It needs to be very carefully monitored and there are very rigid guidelines about how to monitor the blood count. The person taking the medication needs to be carefully monitored for risk of infection and other side effectit is effective in the treatment rheumatoid arthritis and that's why was approved.
