YES: With herpes simplex virus, the viral outbreak period can last from 6 to 23 days. At the prodromal period (itching/burning sensation before the visible signs or outbreak) you may be able to reduce the severity by taking antiviral meds and using a topical antiviral cream or ointment. You are contagious to yourself and others from prodromal until 3 days after the lesions are completely healed.
