You're pregnant?: Pregnancy tests come in two varieties. One says yes or no as to being pregnant (urine or blood tested). The other is a blood test which tells how much pregnancy hormone(hcg) is in your blood and can be useful for your doctor in assessing how your pregnancy is progressing.

Lots of HCG: A quicker response means a higher level of pregnancy hormone (hcg), which would be the case in an advanced pregnancy, multiple gestation (twins or more), or in a molar pregnancy (an abnormal condition).

Depends: A positive test has two bands. One band means either a negative test or an invalid test. Please read the package insert as the position of the colored band determines if it is a negative test of an unreliable test.

A 20-year-old female asked:
After I take a pregnancy test and wait for results(negative) I take the test appart, there is a very faint test line what does this mean?

Dr. Evelyn Anderson answered

Depends...: It is important to follow the label directions, interpreting the test after the recommended time. Do not take it apart. As the test begins to dry out, a line can form, causing a false positive result (in other words, you would appear to be pregnant when you are not). Repeat the test . Consider using one of the more specific tests that gives a result that is more than just a line. Take care.
