In terms of acid base disorders, why does metabolic have an acute syndrome compared to respiratory having an acute and chronic phase?

Compensation: When you have a metabolic acid/base disorder, you compensate rapidly by changing your respiratory rate. When you have a respiratory acid/base disorder, it takes several days for your kidneys to compensate.
