After a head injury to a two year old, how do you know if your child's nose is running or if its the clear fluid that your told to watch for?

It's tricky: The clear fluid you are talking about is cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) presumably leaking from the cribiform plate (were the nerves involved in smell are located). The fluid can be sent to the lab for analysis, but in general, if the CSF leak is significant, the patient has other symptoms like headache and anosmia (can't smell). This is tough to tell in a young child. If concerned, see your doctor.

Talk to MD: When in doubt consult a physician. The chemical makeup of cerebro-spinal fluid is different from that of nose dripping. The physician can evaluate your child and figure out what is causing the problem.
