Better approaches: This can be treated by injecting the the veins with medicine to make them close off by scarring down. It is done through a small puncture in the vein.

May not need surgery: Although your doctor is right, varicoceles are usually not a problem you have to worry about, it clearly gives you concern. I would see a urologist. This could very well be something that can be treated by an interventional radiologist without surgery. Even if you decide to do nothing about it, it sounds like it would be worth it to get more information.
