No easy answer: It usually is not difficult to regulate the dose of thyroid hormone needed after thyroidectomy. It is important to take the medication on an empty stomach and wait at least 40 min before eating. Do not take any other meds or supplements at the same time. I prefer patients to use a brand of thyroid hormone rather than generic to avoid fluctuations in thyroid levels.

Can be difficult: While many patients feel fine on thyroid hormone pills after thyroid surgery, others have more trouble feeling "just right". One reason for this might be that for thyroid cancer patients, docs aim for thyroid levels just a little higher than people are used to. That has to be balanced against risk of recurrence. Some people feel better with a little T3 (liothyronine) and a lower dose of t4. Ask your doctor!
