A total body disease: Gout, like diabetes, affects the entire body. It is an error in the metabolism of a substance called purines. The body cannot break this down enough to be expelled from the body. Purines stay in the body in the form of uric acid. When this getsto a high enough level, it forms crystals which get deposited in the joints-- usually one joint at a time, this can be controlled by medication.
