Periodontal abscess: You don't say how long you had it....But your gums are infected and you need to see a periodontist (gum specialist)to take care of it. Or you could continue to suffer until the rest of your gums get infected and you will need full mouth gum surgery which is really a lot of fun pain and swelling and more pain. So see your dentist asap and have it taken care of.

Possible infection: It's most likely swelling from an inflammation due to poor plaque control or impacted food, or...It may be an infection in the gums. In any case, see a dentist as soon as possible to see exactly what is going on and what treatment is necessary. Don't let it go untreated as it will only get worse, and infections that are left untreated can result in serious complications.
