Sometimes: Atomoxetine (strattera) is helpful for adhd in certain patients, but it is not a first line choice. It has side effects in liver and increased suicidality.

Yes it is.: It is one of the non-amphetamine medications used for adhd. It takes a few weeks to get into your system, but has a 24 hour effect unlike the amphetamines which last 4 - 12 hours. It has a more subtle effect.

YES: It is 2nd line choice but especially good if person doesn't tolerate stimulants (first line) or has substance abuse issue. Recent review in medical literature states strattera (atomoxetine) has an onset of action within 4weeks (possibly within 1week in subsequent responders) but requires at least 12weeks for full response to be demonstrated. As an antidepressant it has warning re suicide risk.

Not first line: The first line medications are stimulants. For people who cannot take stimulants and for those with high levels of anxiety interfering with their ability to focus and attend, Strattera (atomoxetine) may an appropriate medication.

Just want to add: Some recent research studies put Strattera (atomoxetine) up there with Ritalin. It takes longer to get to therapeutic dose and needs to be expertly titrated. Dr Thomas Brown one of the foremost experts on ADHD uses Strattera (atomoxetine) to augment stimulants under certain circumstances. Strattera (atomoxetine) (myself included) is often overlooked as an effective treatment. Work slowly with a patient and attentive physician.
