Inflammation: Poor teeth hygiene can affect heart in 2 ways. Gingivitis (inflammation of gums) creates an inflammatory enviroment which can affect arteries leading to plaque in arteries that feed the heart muscle. This can lead to heart attacks. Secondly bacteria from bad teeth can enter the blood stream and infect valves of the heart (bacterial endocarditis).

Oral-systemic link: Irritated, swollen gums bleed easily and are loaded with bacteria. When your gums bleed, bacteria enter the blood stream and affect the heart and other organs. The key is reduction of oral bacteria on a daily basis. In university studies, the perio protect method has been shown to significantly reduce oral bacteria from the gumline pockets.
