Irregular bleeding: A pregnancy test will detect even very small amounts of pregnancy hormone, so if it is negative--highly unlikely you're pregnant. It is common to have some irregular bleeding from time to time, but an evaluation by your gyn may be in order if you are concerned or if this is common for you.

Hormonal imbalance: Menstrual irregularities are not uncommon and anovulatory cycle is a common cause. If you miss more than two periods it would be time to see your doctor. If you do not wish to be pregnant, use contraception all the time. You may consider implanted contraceptive or an IUD.
