How long: How long have you had this throat infection? More information is needed. Any fever? Any lumps in the neck, any cough? Any other symptoms like gi/vomiting/diarrhea? If you have a typical sore throat, these are mostly viral and will get better in a short time period. You could try symptomatic care with warm fluids and salt water gargles. If it persists or you have a high fever, see your doctor.

Dpends: If it is viral, supportive treatment like soft foods, tylenol/ibuprofen, throat lozenges help. However, if these do not help or the pain worsens, you should see your doctor. True bacterial throat infections (such as strep throat) require antibiotics, and can become serious if not treated appropriately.
