Acquiring language : Is, indeed, easier for anyone from birth-5 & about 50% of folks with classical autism are "non-verbal, " meaning they are >6 & have < 50 words that they use to communicate. What does his early chidhood special ed teacher say about his joint attention, which precedes reciprocal communication? A speech/language therapist & bcba can help with intensive, repetitive therapy.

It depends: Some children with autism do not develop a meaningful verbal expressive language even though they may use non verbal means, such as a pictures, to communicate. Speech/language is one the affected domains in autism. Traditional speech therapy should be utilized as well as other interventions such as music therapy, interactive metronome, and hemispheric integration.
