A member asked:

Can someone contract aids and die within three years?

Yes although unusual: Natural history studies in the 1980's, before we had effective treatment for hiv, showed that the average person had HIV for about 10 years before becoming symptomatic. A few people progressed very rapidly and died in three years. This is why it is so important to be tested for HIV and find out early, so people can get on good treatment and get control over the hiv.

Yep: If you live in the underdeveloped world this is a real possibility. If you bother to seek out health care in the US you can live quite well, but will need to follow doctors advise & keep up with your meds.
