Have a screening : Many primary care providers have enough experience to identify the issue or will screen for depression using standardized questionnaires. Such a screening is a starting point so additional study or treatment can be started.

Child psychology: Depression in teens can look a bit different than that in adults and some checklists and screens are really not very sensitive - probably why studies have shown large incidence of failure to diagnose depression in primary care settings.
