No HCV infection: The first test that is done to see if someone has been exposed to hcv is an antibody test. If it is negative the vast majoity of people do not need additional testing. If someone had a recent exposure (high risk injection, sex, etc) the antibody might not be positive yet (can take 3 -6 months) and a hcv RNA (viral load) test is done. Also, if HIV or other immunosuppression may need RNA test.

Depends on exposure: Negative hep c antibody means no evidence of chronic hepatitis c infection. In acute hep c or in setting of immunosuppression, hcv viral load testing is helpful because hcv RNA can be detected within 2-3 days after exposure. Antibodies to hcv are detectable an average of 7-8 weeks after exposure.
