A member asked:

Have low monocytes and normal lymphocytes?

2 doctors weighed in across 2 answers

Likely normal varian: Monocytes normally comprise 5-10% of all white blood cells (WBC) and are "phagocytic cells" - they "eat" toxins and damaged cells, bacteria, etc. Levels are elevated by infection, inflammation, cancer. Monocyte levels are decreased by steroid drugs, chemotherapy, some bacterial toxins and with disorders damaging bone marrow. Normal lymphocytes at your age is reassuring. More info needed to interpr.

Context: As a pathologist, i spend a lot of time telling other folks, "don't focus on the numbers, focus on the person." a low absolute monocyte count seldom means anything. A low percentage of monocytes may reflect a transient increase in other cells due to the slight stresses of minor illness or everyday life. If your physician is not concerned, you should not be either.
