Not usually: You haven't said what is causing your hand swelling. Swelling related to injuries can be quite variable. Keeping the injured area elevated above heart level will decrease swelling. Keeping your hand down will increase your swelling. Variable swelling can make fitting a cast more difficult, but they are usually cheaper than splints.
