They can hurt: Ganglions are fluid filled cysts that tend to occur around joints and tendons. Generally the cyst itself does not hurt, although some may experience pain when they are first forming. Later the ganglion may hurt only when pressed on or at the extremes of range of motion. Only your doctor can tell for sure whether the lump is a ganglion or something else to be more concerned about.

Sometimes: Ganglion cysts are often asymptomatic. However, these cysts can sometimes grow in places around the wrist and/or hand that can cause sharp pains, particularly with movements. If it hurts, i would consider cyst removal, either conservatively in the office or through more aggressive surgical means.
