Biopsy is best: The best way is to have one removed and path report will confirm the real diagnosis but on general lipomas ate painless lumps under the skin only and neurofibromas can be are often sensitive and can be deep both are usually benign.

Imaging can help: If lesions are superficial some imaging techniques such as ultrasound and mr imaging can often differentiate these benign tumors. It is true biopsy is gold standard for differentiation. Doppler ultrasound may differentiate by degree of perfusion or blood supply.
