Many possibilities..: Upper abdominal pain is associated with many causes. When the pain radiates from the front of the abdomen through to the back we consider problems with the pancreas such as pancreatitis. The most common causes of pancreatitis are gallstones and drinking (etoh). Non-gi etiologies worth mentioning are shingles (rash?), obesity causing impingement and radicular pain from spinal disease. Good luck.
