Physical dependence, euphoria, nausea, constipation, pruritus due to histamine release, respiratory depression are examples. Pain relief: Short term use of opiates is effective for mild to severe pain, depending on the opiate. Long term use can cause you to have side effects such as nausea, vomiting, and constipation. You can also develop tolerance to the opioid and it will cease to provide you relief.
