Root Sensitivity: Many times pain from whitening is due to exposed root surfaces. This can be minimized by using desensitizing toothpastes found over the counter. Sensodyne is a good choice. We find that the red colored tube works best.

Immediately stop usi: The sensitivity may be from the whitening agent touching the gums and causing a chemical burn. The effect on the teeth may be from the whitening agent being too strong and on the tooth for too long a period of time. Apply a desensitizing toothpaste, such as sensodyne, with your finger on the teeth and letting it stay there for 2-3 minutes. Time will decrease the sensitivity.

Sensodyne.: If you purchased these strips without seeing a dentist first for a check-up, you may be applying bleach to teeth that have cavities. This will hurt a lot. Next, the over-the-counter whitening systems are famous for causing sensitivity even without cavities and if the ph of the strip is not buffered, which most are not, you can ruin your enamel. Stop the strips, see a dentist, and use sensodyne.

Stop: If the discomfort is severe discontinue using the whitening product. Use sensodyne toothpaste for 2-3 weeks then try restarting the whitening process. If sensitivity persists then the process may not be for you.

Try every other day.: The reason it's painful when you use whitening products is because the process dehydrates teeth. Often i will have patients bleach every other day and for a shorter time period each session. The other thing that you can do is use tooth paste that is made for sensitive teeth while you bleach. Nonetheless, it can take up to a couple of weeks for the sensitivity from bleaching to completely resolve.

Get evaluated 1st: The main problem with patients who use home whitening products is that they often have problems that they are unaware of and require treatment prior to home whitening. Further, they are not aware that fillings, crowns and veneers do not whiten, and end up with uneven colored teeth. Tooth & gum problems need to be taken care of first! see your dentist for an evaluation and how best to proceed.

It is normal: It is normal to have sensitivity in teeth after whitening. Not everyone has sensitivity, but if you do, try using the product every other day and using a Fluoride gel in between uses.
