HIstory is key: Knowing a patients medical history and as much as possible about their heart function allows anesthesiologists to plan safe and effective surgeries. Addition monitors may be involved such as intra-operative cardiac echo and invasive arterial blood pressure monitors, but all these things help us to reduce the risk from the surgery and some of the medications used as part of the anesthetic.

Depends on problem: Some heart problems have almost no effect on the safety of anesthesia and surgery. Other heart problems would only be dangerous if we didn't have the details and couldn't plan carefully. (this may include selecting specific medications or using specialized monitors.) other heart problems - like a recent severe heart attack - raise the risk from anesthesia.

Somewhat: Talk to your anesthesiologist before your procedure. Anesthetics can cause cardiac depression, so the use on patients with heart problems must be watched closely. We have many different techniques and monitors that can be used on these patients, but it is nice to know before the operation starts. Hope that this helps.
