Transposition of the: Great vessels can be diagnosed on 2nd trimester fetal ultrasound or fetal echocardiogram. If not diagnosed prenatally, cyanosis leads to diagnostic studies the first days of life. It is incompatible with life if not surgically repaired. Sometimes a less invasive procedure is done to oxygenate the baby shortly after birth, but corrective open heart surgery is usually done by the first week.
