Hydrocephalus Shunt: Most people who need a diversionary catheter placed for hydrocephalus, require the catheter for a lifetime. Fortunately newer technology can allow a system to work for years. Less than 5% of shunts can be removed, but the process can be life threatening. Most surgeons are apprehensive to remove an internal system once placed for this reason.

Usually permanent: As a general rule, vp shunt should remain in place. For some the system develops a dependence on the shunt, for others, the shunt may not be necessary but the risk of injury during removal is too great.
