A member asked:

Is it common for there to not have been an improvement in optic neuritis induced peripheral vision loss after 8 weeks? will recovery be spontaneous?

Recovery takes time: The visual recovery after optic neuritis can take weeks to months. Studies have found that at a year 90% of people had 20/40 vision or better. The recovery of peripheral vision is similar. The use of high dose IV steroids at the time of the optic neuritis might speed visual recovery, but the final vision is the same. It is important to be followed by a neurologist and an ophthalmologist for this.

Optic neuritis : It depends on the cause of the optic neuritis. When associated with multiple sclerosis it tends to get better. However with other causes (sarcoidosis, NMO) less likely to improve. It can also take longer to improve if not treated with steroids.
