Lack of Control: Lack of control makes it deadly. The most common causes of death in diabetics is that of kidney failure or heart disease. Diabetes "wears the kidneys out" and diabetics are at much increased risk for premature heart disease. These co-morbid conditions can be avoided by a great degree by excellent control.
