Abscess: Gum disease almost never hurts unless it is severe and/or periodontal abscess/endo abscess occur. In these situations, bacteria and bacterial products could not be contained or drained causing localized tissue reaction, i.e. Swelling and pain. If the drainage established by either treating the cause (root canal or debridement) pain would resolve. You can help to drain by brushing the area.
