Can be serious: Hepatitis b is often a chronic disease that can lead to serious damage of the liver, including cirrhosis. It is also associated with an increased risk of liver cancer. There are antiviral treatments that can sometimes eliminate the infection. The first step is to see a hepatologist (liver specialist) to evaluate your current condition.

Acute or chronic: Most everyone with acute hepatitis b will recover without issues. Those who develop chronic infection (> 6 months) can carry the virus for years, often for a lifetime. Many of these people will die with the virus, not of the virus. However, some people can develop significant liver disease which can progress to cirrhosis. These people should be treated with medication.
