A member asked:

Do masks really help you avoid breathing in pollution?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Not for long: Cloth and paper masks block some pollutants for a few minutes. After that they are more humid and less able to block. Additionally, they are less able in general to block really small particles when wet, like viruses and nano particles of pollution. Thus it is essential to build up your internal immune system as much as possible.
