Absolutely yes: Retainer wires collect food particles and if not cleaned well, you will develop a lot of hardened deposits (tartar). Buy floss threaders, which are like a plastic sewing needle, you place floss onto and can "thread" between your teeth, since you can no longer floss vertically since your teeth are wired together. Or buy superfloss, which is floss + threaders in one. Electric toothbrush can help.

Importance of floss: In short, the answer is yes! because you have a permanent retainer, it is even more important for you to floss between those teeth as the wire will tend to more easily accumulate food debris and plaque. If left alone, this plaque will cause localized gingivitis and eventually periodontitis (loss of supporting tissues around the tooth = recessed gums). Try superfloss.

For sure: While it is more difficult to floss where you have a fixed retainer, it is very important for you to do so. Because of the fixed retainer, people accumulate more plaque under/around the retainer which is more reason to floss. If you have a difficult time flossing, you may use a waterpik which can be purchased at any drugstore. Also ask your dentist if you could have a removable retainer instead.

Many methods: If you don't want cavities, decalcifications and gum problems, you have to keep all areas of your mouth clean. While dental floss is usually the best method to clean in between your teeth, there are lots of other dental aids available to help when patients have fixed bridges or braces. Ask your orthodontist what is best for you and have them actually demonstrate on you how to use them.

YES!!: You sure do. Sinnce they are splinted together you have to use a "floss threader" and enter under the permanent retainer to floss the gums. Gl!

Absolutely: You must clean between all teeth. Try a floss threader to help feed the floss under the fixed retainer. Another choice is to use a water-pik daily. Ask your orthodontist for help.
