No recommended: I know that there are many home remedies out there, but what you really need is time. Cold sores usually last about 2 weeks. If caught early enough, (usually within 48 hrs) antiviral medications, in both ointment and pill form can help alot, but need to be started at the onset of the outbreak. Call your primary care md or dentist who can help you with the "right stuff".

Not a good idea, but: There are good ways to address cold sores. I prescribe a few different medications that reduce the symptoms and make the cold sores leave faster, but you should get something specific for that application. Mouth tissue is way different from foot tissue ;).

Whoa Nelly - don't: Go there. That can harm you. Melissa officinalis or lemon balm (cream) expedites healing of cold sores. It can reduce healing time by half. Studies also show that regular use can help v recurrences. Brief supplementation with lysine 1, 000mg orally three times a day at the onset, can also hasten healing. Your physician can prescribe oral valtrex (valacyclovir).
