Always like that?: Healthy children in the U.S. Usually do not have nail problems related to malnutrition, so soft nails are more likely be be familial. A parent can ask the primary care doctor or pediatrician to look at the nails, and refer to a pediatric dermatologist if needed. The doctor will want to know if the child's nails have always been soft.
