What is a mouth gag retractor used for?

Never heard of this.: I think you are asking about lip and cheek retractors. These are used to keep the lips and cheeks off of the teeth and are commonly used for anterior bonding, photos, whitening and sometimes for impressions. There are no gags used commonly in dentistry that I am aware of.
