Knee dysfunction: Need to see sports/orthopedic doc since may have damaged an internal structure like meniscus; also sounds like some wear-&-tear osteoarthritis. If overweight, start weight loss program to postpone knee replacement. Doc may do arthroscopy to repair damage.

Locking knee: Sounds like a condition known as chondromalacia or if you have had a knee injury in the past it could be due to a meniscal tear. Locking of the knee is generally the result of a free body of some kind. You may need an MRI on the knee to make the diagnosis, and an orthopedic consult.

Knee locking: You may have a few things going on...A torn meniscus with an unstable fragment, loose cartilagenous or bony body, inflamed synovial tissue, underlying arthritis with bone spurs present, an acute inflammatory condition such as gout or pseudo gout. Grinding of the knee is usually due to chondromalacia of the patella or trochlea.
