Not directly: It should not be harmful, but should not inhibit you from evaluating the "close to anemia" state, assuming his doctor thinks that is necessary. Even if it is iron deficiency that is the problem it is important to find out why & whether he is not getting enough, not absorbing it or is losing it somewhere.
