Persistent cough: Depending on your age, different causes for a persistent cough are more or less likely. Allergies is one common cause, recurrent viral infections (especially in the winter and if exposed to school aged children). After pneumonia or a bad bornichits, cough can persist. Medical causes include lesions of the throat, foreign body in the airways, chronic lung infections, and tumors in the airway.

Depends: There are a number of causes for cough. It can be from something as simple as a post-infectious cough. A cough after a respiratory infection. It could be bronchitis - the vast majority of the time bronchitis is viral. Other causes of cough are allergies(post-nasal drip syndrome). Asthma, gerd and ace inhibitors(bp medication) can also cause cough. You need to be seen by a dr.
