Nail care: Ingrown toenails can be temporarily remedied through soaking your foot in warm water, removal of embedded debris from the nail borders, and applying an antibiotic ointment to temporarily soften the corners. If you have continued pain, redness or drainage, get it looked at by a professional as you may need to have the ingrown nail border removed and you may need antibiotics.

Nail surgery: If you have reoccurring toenail problems, consider permanent partial nail removal. After the toe is numbed, the offending edge(s) can be removed and the adjoining root cauterized with a caustic medication. The procedure is quick and has minimal disability until recovery. The cauterized root will drain out, then the edges dry and the nail shouldn't cause further problems.
