Infection: If you have an infection of your toe which is causes by an ingrown toenail, you can soak the toe in epsom salt and warm water which might help to alleviate some of your symptoms. You should seek further evaluation by your podiatrist.

It depends: There are various types of infections. Infections can be due to a fungus, bacterial or due to a virus. The treatment will depend on the type of infection and on what exactly is infected. The infection could be of the skin, soft tissue or bone. Have it evaluated by a professional to get the appropriate treatment. By leaving it alone it may get worse.
