Today: As long as there were no complications during the surgery he should be walking the day after.

Right away: Most orthopaedic surgeons allow their patients to start walking immediately after surgery, typically with a walker or crutches. It may be 2-6 weeks before he can walk "normal" without any gait aides. The more actively he participates in post-operative rehab and therapy, the quicker he will be back to "normal", .
