Shingles: Herpes zoster is the medical word for shingles. When you get chicken pox the virus (herpes) rests in a nerve of your spine. Years later, if you are under stress or sick you can get shingles which is on one side of your body and can be very painful. If is not uncommon for the pain to start before the rash.
