Take quiz/see doctor: Most people are occasionally depressed, but there are clear criteria doctors use to assess clinical depression. There are good online quizzes at http://psychcentral.Com/depquiz.Htm & http://counsellingresource.Com/lib/quizzes/depression-testing/ if you feel depressed consult with a psychologist, psychiatrist or family doctor. While medications may help, i advise a holistic approach to treatment.

Impaired function: Depression is an illness, with physical symptoms (changes in sleep, appetite, energy) feelings of hopelessness, loss of interest, social withdrawal, poor concentration, possibly suicidal thoughts. If someone has these symptoms for at least 2 wks and is unable to function at full capacity, treatment is appropriate.

State of mind/see MD: "depression" has become misused for "sad". "officially" diagnose depression for treatment/disability by doctors/psychologists. But, you can understand its nature if you know it's a "state of mind": people feel low energy, motivation, interest, sex drive, purpose, projectionm; irritability, guilt/worthlessness, and can lead to suicidal ideas. Discuss it with md to define severity and your needs.
