Exercise induced: He may have exercise induced asthma. When he runs his lungs expand and may be irritating his intercostal nerves.You may want to discuss the problem with a pulmonologist.

Many reasons: At some point most runners will experience lower back pain. There are multiple reasons that this can occur, some more common than others. New activity running long distances postural abnormalities previous or current injuries elsewhere in the body weakness in core or hip muscles decreased legs and lumbar (back) flexibility poor running mechanics running up hills.
