They Happen!: Most any joint can develop hypertrophy (enlargement) of bone. "spurs" is the common term for this build up of bone. It can be the result of trauma to the joint, osteoarthritis of the joint, other arthritis conditions and general wear and tear. Just having them does not have to mean anything. It they become large enough and in the right position, they can be painful and need medical attention.
