Genes, thoughts...: The causes of depression are many, including genetic susceptibility, life circumstances, and depressive thoughts. Concerning latter, all-or-nothing thinking plays a major roll. Learning to challenge or dismiss that cognitive process can be helpful. Seeing a good therapist is needed, possibly along with antidepressant medication prescribed by a psychiatrist if indicated.

Finding a qualified psychologist whom you can establish rapport will help you discern what changes will best equip you to manage your depression. The causes are too many to list, and possibly yet to be discovered, but therapy works.
